Let me preface this by saying: the staff and location were excellent. Knew going in this was an inexpensive hotel and aligned my expectations accordingly. Here’s what I have to say about the place: it’s like a well stocked dorm room and now you’re a couple months into the semester and the place feels dingy and dirty. They say they don’t do housekeeping daily for environmental reasons, but then you find a plastic bag on your door knob with towels and all sorts of toiletries wrapped in plastic. Honestly, I’d rather have the rug vacuumed and the stains on the walls washed off because I brought my own toothbrush and I don’t want more paper cups. If you do decide to stay here, and you’re a couple, I would recommend you select the room with the twin beds based on the square footage.

Great Location for a great Kyoto experience
Amazing location close to Gion and Shrines/Temples the river and a great variety of shopping and dining options. The bus stops close to the hotel and the train is a short walk. Rooms were small and cozy but had all the necessary amenities. Starbucks was on the first floor of the hotel with was also very convenient. It did not have a laundry on-site which was inconvenient so pack or buy extra cloths or plan trip to the local laundrymat.

Very Japanese hotel. Tiny rooms but clean. Breakfast was not good, not worth the money. Next to a Starbucks and in good location next to a major Shinto shrine

APA is a very mid range Japanese chain hotel for Japanese. I believe it’s popular with Japanese salary man. Rooms are small, beds are very soft. Dont get breakfast here, it’s mediocre at best and there are plenty of good options nearby. The location however is perfect. It’s around the corner of Gion and next to a key temple. It’s also on the quiet end of the road into the center of Kyoto… which is very walkable. I liked having the option to sleep at the quiet end of town. Entrance is not easy to find. It’s next to Starbucks. Bear hugs is the name of the massage shop on the 1F and it’s pretty good. I recommend both the foot and body massage. Pricing is in-line or even a little cheaper than in the center of town

Most disgusting hotel I have ever been to, more so than any motel or hostel I have been to. Brown and other colored stains all over the walls of room and bathroom. Blankets stained and yellow. The only good thing is the location. Also no Ability to even attempt to check in early even if the room is ready. Plus an earlier than usual 10am checkout

Since property is in Gion, it is close to activities you can do in Gion area (theatre performaces/seeing Geishas on the street). There are a number of bus stops and train lines near the hotel. Starbucks is next door as well as other cafes and restaurants so it can be busy at times. Room size is small which is standard in Japan. During our check out (which I hope is an isolated case) we waited at least 30 mins for the staff at the reception. It must have been 7 or 7.30 AM, there were few guests ahead of us waiting already. They pressed the buzzer multiple times to ask for assistance but no one attended. Until finally a female staff came out of their office no apologies or anything and could not communicate in english. She was wearing a trainee badge. A male staff followed, same no apologies or anything.
