A Great Hostel
This hostel is great. It's a little out of the way if you don't have a car, but the bus is only $3 from the airport and it's only an 11 minute walk. They have chocolate pudding every evening at 8pm. *(for Americans, it's not milky, liquidy pudding, but baked "pudding".) It gets pretty cold in the fall/winter. They offer extra blankets, but I still found it very chilly. I really liked the communal spaces and the hammocks, love a good hammock. I think this hostel is probably really busy in the summer, but in late April/May it's less busy.

Nice place but noisy main stayer in the hostel
The place is ok but the problem was the stayer of the hostel they’re very noisy talking and laughing up to past midnight as if no cares in the world! The washing room only has a separate hot and cold water literally! It’s either you washed your face or hands with freezing cold or boiling hot water! You choose.

This place was just fine for me, thanks. Only thing that detracted it is that the walls are very thin, so other people's steps, door-closings and conversations were all too audible, even through my earplugs!

After traveling long hrs we realized that check in was until 8pm. We were way passed that. Drive by to property and found instructions inside an envelope on how to go in 🙌. People staying there were very nice. Place was clean and very nice.

4/10 Fair

Traveler arrived for check in 2 hours into the designated check-in time and was told that she wouldn’t be able to check in for another hour or so because there was no one to do it. She was exhausted and needing rest after traveling for 24 hrs, and wasn’t directed to a common area to wait, but invited to put her suitcase in a closet of some sort. She was able to check in 45-60 min later, and the space was fine. Just unavailable and confusing at a time when it would’ve been preferred to have the room and check-in process as described.

My stay at Tasman Bay Backpackers was great, the staff were really friendly and welcoming and the hostel was clean throughout. It’s close to the centre of town but very quiet at night. The nightly chocolate pudding was a nice touch and great opportunity to chat to others in the communal areas.

10/10 Exceptional

This accommodation is extremely surprising, compared to many others. It feels more like a well kept, vibrant and relaxed large house instead of a commercial property, while still maintaining an excellent level of staff attendance, and security and room availability. All of the guests staying there were very friendly, and there are plenty of sinks, cooking areas, fridges, food storage and bathrooms available. The lounge area is large and cosy, and they serve delicious ice cream and chocolate cake every single night! Also, as an extra bonus, there's a very friendly and approachable female cat that always is happy to receive attention. Recommend 10/10, can't think of any faults at all.

2/10 Poor

The whole stay was uncomfortable. The walls are paper thin and the other guests were up and loud well past 2am. We could hear them speaking. Not shouting. Speaking. The walls are that bad. The shower curtain had an almost tangible stench. The soap bottle in our ensuite room had been watered down significantly. The spare blankets in the closet had the smell of death on them. I woke up in the morning smelling like the musty mattress, a smell that was difficult to get off thanks to the extraordinarily low water pressure in the bathroom, not to mention the fact that even with shower shoes I felt uncomfortable being in the shower area. I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone. It's the only time I've ever stayed somewhere and genuinely wanted to demand my money back. For the life of me I don't understand the 5 star reviews, they must be from people who usually stay in the free DOC huts.

6/10 Good

The ensuite room we had for 3 nights was spacious, clean and comfortable with a superior queen bed. Perfect sleep every night. The ensuite was the biggest i have seen in this type of accommodation. It was also sited privately from the rest of the accommodation. The property was constantly full of clients. Maybe because of this, the weak points were, the kitchen area needed to be managed better that ensured it was hygenically clean and there was a constant supply of clean tea towels. There was no TV anywhere and the onsite parking was inadequate.

Excellent service and room conditions. The staff knew a lot about the city and had provided booklets in the rooms. Free dessert in the lounge to encourage socialising is a great idea!

Homely stay!
Loved the free pudding. Hostel is really clean and friendly. Lots of space to hang out and it felt quite homely. Kitchen was well equipped. Staff really friendly. Only issue was noise travels - we were kept up because we could hear people downstairs in the common area.
