This hotel is very tired. It is really hardly open at the moment with no bar operating and downstairs lounge space available but dark and unwelcoming. The room was dingy. We were given 2 paper cups, no glasses and no soap or shower foam. The bath ran brown.

a disappointing experience.
It was disappointing the hotel is a tired and dog eared, breakfast was poor better on the second day than the first I booked with the option of cancelling but they moved the cancellation point 24hrs sooner without letting me know.

Lovely building in the centre of Southwell. Unfortunately the owners have had to severely curtail the services on offer so have reduced it to a bed and breakfast only, so no bar and no restaurant except for breakfast. Nevertheless there are plenty of alternative restaurants within a short walk in the town and the hotel are happy to direct guests to them.

Irish rover.
The hotel was very disappointing it seemed more a bed and breakfast the dining room and bar were closed also the hotel locked the doors at 8pm, fortunately 20 yards away there is another hotel serving reasonably priced food and drink, our room no 9 was a little dated also on a unusually hot evening the heating in the bathroom was on constantly, the hotel says that toiletries are provided we had in our bathroom hand wash and conditioner for your hair the shower was cobbled together with a cheap showerhead on an ornate set of taps, the chair in the room was broken also no hand sanitiser was provided in the room breakfast was served by a shoeless gent. So altogether an unusual experience,

Seriously over-priced accommodation for what you get. On arrival the receptionist was on the phone - there was little acknowledgement of my arrival even after she’d ended her call. The room was checked before I was given access;l I was told the bedside lamps were missing (“people take things”) but a replacement lamp was not offered. General maintenance of the hotel was lacking - carpets smelled musty, door lock was awkward and clearly replaced but not poorly executed, paint over light switches etc. Nowhere to hang clothes or place suitcase in room. No hairdryer in room. Chose hotel as it had a restaurant attached but on arrival was told it was closed. Breakfast was varied enough but coffee was undrinkable; cutlery was smeary and fruit bowls on buffet table were covered with placemats “to keep the flies off”. Asked if taxi could be ordered and was given a list of numbers. Was glad I was only staying one night. A hotel likely steeped in history in much need of an overhaul.

Would stay again
Very good overnight stay. Only negative was the seemingly microwaved scramble eggs for part of breakfast. Otherwise very attentive staff and the quality of stay was value for money at this very historically interesting old inn.

Characterful hotel spoilt by bland rooms
The hotel has a lot of character but the rooms, at the back of the hotel, are characterless. The corridor and the rooms are painted white, which definitely does not go with the rest of the hotel. It's stark like a 70's motel. We stayed on one of the hottest days of the year and as the windows only open about 5 inches, we had to rely on a fan provided in the room. It wasn't a comfortable that night. The shower was modern but no shelf was provided to have washing items conveniently located during a shower, everything had to be placed on the floor. There was no handrail for the shower, a necessity for older guests like ourselves. We were only told that the hotel was having problems with staffing when we arrived and no food was available for the night of our stay. There is plenty of eating establishments close by but Southwell does seem to be affected worse than some towns by Covid. Don't hotel managers/owners watch "The Hotel Inspector', time and again she highlights the failings in an hotel that impact badly on the customers experience.

Fantastic hotel with old world charm
A fantastic old world hotel, we have a four poster bedroom which exceeded our expectations. The bathroom was large and well appointed, it was covid safe. The staff were both pleasant and helpful. We would visit thus hotel again when in that area

Interesting quirky hotel
Lovely, quirky old hotel. Room was interesting, with a 4 poster. Sadly the pandemic means some soft furnishings were removed. Food was ok. Service was good enough but might be improved.

King Charles Suite
Lovely quirky old building, needs a bit of TLC in places although the food & service was superb. Loved the history and it was a great staying in the King Charles suite, very comfy bed and huge bathroom. Floors are a little uneven being such an old building so you need to watch your step. A lovely stay and we'll definitely use this hotel again if we stay in Southwell.
