2/10 Poor

Poor, well below standards
Looks stunning from the outside, sadly the good part ended with that. The spa was next to the pub, not joined onto the hotel itself, changes for , Robe, slippers, TOWLES EVEN! Just tooth shine off the stay. Why there is. Charge when you would need a robe and slippers with the spa being so far away from the hotel is beyond me. Spa wasn’t exclusive to hotel guests and felt more like a communal spa than something at as hotel retreat WiFi was shocking and didn’t work very well, the room was very tired and dated with very little character in what looks a stunning building from the outside. Reception staff not very engaged either. Breakfast wasn’t included and charged separately, despite this if you wanted anything other than a regular coffee then that was charged on top of your breakfast. (Which was limited and not very warm) don’t think I will stay again due to the penny pinching charges that would normally be included included in my experience. Sadly wouldn’t stay again.

Lovely hotel, always spotlessly clean & very friendly. This is the third time I have been back. The spa is very relaxing & breakfast is fantastic, lots of choice. Great bus service to York.

6/10 Good

Average, definitely could do better !
The negatives. A lovely building but the old part is in need of TLC, it looks tired. Breakfast is a buffet, plentiful but uninspiring ie you won't starve but that's as far as it goes. There aren't enough staff generally in the hotel so service is patchy and at times unsatisfactory (I'm sure they're trying hard but just not enough of them !) The spa closed earlier on the weekend, which seemed counter intuitive. The young lady on the spa reception was not a good advert for customer service, we asked to hire robes towel and slippers as a 'bundle' and were told there were no bundles available despite half a dozen being clearly visible ( no explanation and we didn't have the energy to argue the point ) we ended up just getting a towel and slippers but it was a bit confusing ! The good things ! The Parsonage main building is very impressive and charming, the lights along the drive are a nice touch. Parking was plentiful and close by. A few of the staff on reception were very friendly and helpful, our bathroom was nicely done (though there were broken floor tiles). The food at The Fat Abbott (pub next door) was lovely and the waiters were very attentive especially the young dark haired guy on Sat night, well done that man ! The location is great for getting into York as the bus stop is about 50 yds away. To round up, it's not good enough for the prices they charge. Sadly wouldn't stay there again. Someone needs to invest time and money in this faded old beauty !

Characterful hotel with excellent spa facilities
Main house was fine with lots of character. Spa facilities were excellent. We felt that the food standard at the Fat Abbott was fairly basic and maybe undermines the overall experience.

Three night break
Pending reviewReviewed Lovely warm room on ground floor. Best pillows we have slept on. The room and bathroom were spotless. The breakfasts were great with plenty of selection. The spa and pool is definitely the best we have been to. Changing rooms warm and very clean. We went at 8am and it was very quiet. All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Bus service in to York was a bonus and stop just to left of hotel entrance. Will definitely return to this hotel on our next visit to York.

Lovely weekend but ended with a nasty surprise.
We booked a weekend away with added dinner and breakfasts. When we got to the hotel, we booked our 'evening meal. Before ordering food, we said we'd dinner in with our stay. I asked if there was a special menu or limit, and the waiter said no order what you want. On check out, we received a bill for £80 and was told that dinner had a £25.00 limit, and we should have received this in an email. I have looked again at all the emails received and I cannot see any reference to a £25 limit. I am disappointed that we weren't advised of this when we checked in, and especially when I asked the waiter before we ordered dinner. I was told, when we checked out, If I couldn't find an email about the £25 limit, I would be refunded. It's such a shame because, otherwise, we had a lovely weekend

Dosappointed
The room was very cold and the hotel was unable to provide any additional heating (extra blankets provided, but this is second best). We checked out by the required 11am but was told that we now couldnt use the spa facilities after check-out as "new guests will be coming in". But check-in time is from 2pm so there should have been a 3 hour window. This is the first time we're ever been told by a hotel that we cant use the spa facilities post check-out, and we should have been told this by or upon check-in so that we plan our stay better. Food in the "Fat Abbot" is good the service is prompt but service quality is only average/poor (our waiter didnt advise on specials board and didnt seem to know which drinks were on the wine list)

Just OK
Felt like going back in time. Decor is very dated. Very much in need of a refurb. Cleanliness and general room condition was ok, but would have expected a bit more for the price paid. Our room also had a slanted roof and wasn’t very big anyway but this made it feel much smaller. Also didn’t think that the £1.50 charge for towels to use the pool was really necessary or justified within the price we paid.
