Want to go again
I really enjoyed my stay here. I was travelling for business so had little time for site seeing but the area was beautiful. Hotel was spotlessly clean and the food was amazing. Clearly run by someone who wants to provide excellent service. If I visit the area again this is the first hotel I will try to book.

8/10 Very Good

Parking at the pub hotel was difficult as there is only a small car park and there are very narrow streets around the area. As there was no sign of a reception, checking in was challenging. The rooms themselves were very good, clean and had tea-making facilities, TV and an en-suite bathroom. The dinner menu was limited, but the breakfast menu was excellent. Be aware, the Friday night disco and karaoke goes on to 3.00am.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The location right by the river made it a great day as the sun was shining all day. There was a great selection of drinks in the bar. Pool, darts and skysports available. Loved the little snug/cocktail room with plenty of retro games to play from the windows. The onsite American food van provided us with some delicious food. We had the philli-cheese steak baguette. It was lush! Beds were really comfy. Credit goes to the owners who were very warm and pleasant.

2/10 Poor

Made to wait over two hours to see about changing a room. Not clean, especially one of our bedrooms. Food only available from a burger bar trailer in the car oark! Breakfast poor. Owners didn't seem to bothered.

I would have preferred more choice of food in the evening. The American diner food was very tasty but not really what i wanted.

A very quirky hotel steeped in history. The recent new owners are wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. You really feel at home here. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is hearty. Evening meal not always available which perhaps should be communicated to guests. However the meal we had in the quirky Garden Room was superb. There is a burger van in the hotel car park with food cooked by James the hotel manager. This hotel is different and has a charm and a uniqueness which must be experienced. Thank you James and Susan and staff for a perfect 4 days at the Anchor Hotel. We will return ! Barbara and Mark. Ipswich Suffolk

Lovely stay.
Lovely room. Very hospitable hosts and other pleasant guests. Bit of a problem with hot water but hosts very quickly addressed it. Credit to the new owners, they did everything they could to make us welcome. Thank you.

Cheap and cheerful
Cheap and cheerful. We read reviews so didn’t eat there except breakfast which was basic. On both days we were in the restaurant for 5 minutes before anyone took an order

Had a great stay at The Anchor Hotel. Owner James and his wife were very accommodating throughout my stay. The hotel was in a lovely setting, by the river and is steeped in history, being a Court house amongst other things. James the owner is very knowledgeable about this and is happy to talk about it. I will definitely be staying agai abd would highly recommend.

Very poor value for money. Damp rooms with paint peeling & towels feeling damp. We were told it's what to expect from a very old property. So much needs to be done there. We should have asked to see the rooms first before paying. I moved rooms once as the first wasn't finished & smelt of cigarettes. (Not the odour from the scent sticks! We were assured there would be an evening meal but told at 7.30 there was nothing. I would have given it 1 star but the lady cooking breakfast was lovely & made a really nice scrambled egg.

Unexpected find
Intriguing spot Haydon Bridge and if you want to try it out the Anchor is the perfect spot to stop off. The hosts were warm and welcoming and nothing was too small to help with. Room was clean, smart and beautiful view of the river ask for this. Food was good pub grub, my Chilli beef was better than average for a pub. Would go back.

It's a really old building, full of character. The hosts are lovely, having been there only a short time, they have created a charming dining room on the first floor, filled with light. The breakfasts were delicious, individually prepared. We really enjoyed our stay.

Very tired hotel
Pleasant staff but very tired hotel room in need of modernization. Strange breakfast; everything looked like it had been in the deep fat fryer - including the bacon! Could hear adjacent occupant snoring the walls were so thin.

Needs a revamp everywhere.
Tried the Anchor for the first time. Evening meal was very poor. Cold chips tiny portion of peas and over done scampi. Breakfast was help yourself with the cooked items under a hot light tray server, but all items where not hot and eggs were like rubber so gave them a miss. Decor was very tired. Won’t go there again.
