The Fort Shantok Archaeological District is home to the sacred ground of the Mohegan chief known as Uncas and was the principal Mohegan settlement during the 17th century. Officially a National Historic Landmark, this destination lets you explore the native land and learn more about their history and culture. When you visit, you can see the iconic Leffingwell Memorial.
This wigwam-shaped memorial features an inscription highlighting the brave stand of Uncas at the historic fort in the face of aggressors. You'll find this district a few miles northeast of downtown.

Bridge No. 1860, also known as the Samson Occom Bridge, is a stone-arch bridge dating back to 1936 that features impressive stonework. The bridge was built as a Works Progress Administration project and is still used today, carrying more than 1,100 vehicles across it each day.
As an official listing on the National Register of Historic Places, this bridge is remarkably well preserved with particularly appealing viewpoints available looking at it from the banks of the Shantok Brook. You'll find it northwest of town marking the entrance to the Mohegan Reservation.

The Mystic Seaport Museum is a comprehensive museum that hosts 4 National Historic Landmark vessels in addition to numerous other maritime artifacts to explore. Among the housed vessels, you'll find the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest commercial ship in America. It's also the last wooden whaleship in the world that's still in one piece.
Within the museum, you'll find a functional re-creation of a 19th-century coastal village that captures the past and puts it on display. This includes a working shipyard. You'll find it all about 20 minutes southeast of Montville.

Since the museum was founded by a native named John Tantaquidgeon, the museum has explored the spirit of the Mohegans and how they exist in tandem with the natural beauty of the land.
While there's a permanent collection you can enjoy, be sure to look for special events that may be held at the museum. Story hours are quite common and feature a Mohegan elder telling native stories to all who want to listen. You'll find this museum a few miles east of downtown near the Pta Lane Open Space.
