One could say "you get what you pay for" but this place is way to expensive to make such a statement. Two years ago I paid the same price per night to stay in a very nice place in Taichung with an absolutely stunning lobby, shockingly good sound insulation, a bathroom with a good and proper exhaust fan great water pressure, and even a functional portable air purifier to keep the indoor air quality excellent.
This place is about as far from that as you can get. The whole building reeks of cigarette smoke, everything is worn, the elevator is slow and rickety, there was water damage across the ceiling and along the window, the bathroom sink had a huge crack in it, and the longer I spent in the room, the more I could feel grime layering itself up on any part of my body that wasn't covered in clothing. The faucet also exploded water in every direction. I was sneezing all night and my eyes were quite red when I woke up in the morning, a telltale sign the AC unit hasn't been cleaned in decades. There is also absolutely no sound insulation at all. The small child that was a having a hissy fit in the hallway and the mom screeching at him in Taiwanese was so loud, I would have thought this collective emotional meltdown was happening in my room right in front of me.
Inflation is barely happening in Taiwan, yet somehow a hotel as crappy as this one can get away with charging as much as they charge. For less than half the price I paid, I might accept such bad conditions.
