The unfortunate hotel
Check in was not the best. No staff available. Phone to ring for service but went to message bank. Confusion over where to park car. Lift out of order. Restaurant closed for renovations. Most television currently unavailable. Kettle and tea bags available plus used coffee sachets containing no coffee. Some light bulbs not working. Toilet had brown ring under rim as if not cleaned properly for some time. Shower over bath felt unsafe climbing in and out of as there was nothing available for support. Apart from that the room was spacious, the bed was comfortable and a great view of the river. Unfortunately was the word used several times by reception. Some people management and housekeeping skills would enhance this hotel.

The Emerald Hotel - Lisa and Staff
This is the second time I have stayed at the Emerald Hotel in Gisborne. I don’t think I would stay anywhere else. The quality of the rooms are exceptional. They are decent sized rooms and excellent value for money. Compared to other hotels around the country, they are shoebox sized compared to the rooms at the Emerald. Lisa and her team are incredibly friendly and their service is exceptional. Lisa went above and beyond in advising us on the best places to go in Gisborne for food and grocery shopping. She is a wonderful hotel manager and I am grateful for the service that she provided. Overall I thoroughly recommend the Emerald Hotel as a place to stay in Gisborne.

Great location, but a bit tired and could do with a face lift. The guest parking could be a bit better signed.

Our room had a broken bath, lights keep flashing on and off, the phone to call reception was broken, switches were broken, both bedding covers were stained with oil or noticeable staining. There was no blanket throws for warmth as it was pretty cold in the room. The air con was extremely noisey.

Last visited this hotel 17 years ago. Stayed now for a couple of nights on a conference. Still well run with friendly staff. The decor is showing signs of wear and tear and a general redecoration is needed, together with fixing some chips and dents to the walls. The room was big with a lounge area and an accessible bathroom [not needed for me but good to see for those who need it]. Would is use this hotel again - possibly but I might look for something better

My flight into Gizzy was delayed but the lovely (and hilarious) Lisa on the front desk kindly stayed up so I could check in. I was shattered by the time I got to the emrald and being given a room with a river view was a really pleasant surprise after a long, long day. Sure, the Emerald gives off pretty strong Shining vibes - to the point I felt like I might see twin sisters or a naked crone wandering the hallways - but that is part of its charm! Would definitely stay again.

I use to stay at this property many years ago, was always a stand out in every way. Sadly the property needs a lot of love. Buckets everywhere to catch rain on the ground floor. The rooms cleanliness is not good. Never seen a bathroom floor so dirty. Finger prints on tv. Washed cutlery before using. Hallway tables covered in dust. I would love to see this hotel come back to its own. 😔
