We enjoyed our stay at the Elgin. It was comfortable and our room was charming and unique (Rm 57 was part of an annex on the third floor, all wood ceiling and floors). The hotel feels like an oasis within Darjeeling city. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. We stayed at the hotel for Christmas, so it was cold, and the hot water bottles at night were a nice touch. Dinner was very good and a nice variety (Indian menu was far better than western) with good service. However, the bathroom flooded our first night because the pipes were clogged. The bar was quaint but not very well stocked and service was not very good. The front desk was not very knowledgeable about the city and did not provide good service. The Christmas celebration (bonfire and a cultural show) wAs not worth the money (included one glass of wine, bufffet dinner, and no real Christmas themed program). I would recommend staying here, but just set your standards a little lower, even though the hotel bills itself as a much classier place than it really is.
