The Ogden Museum of Southern Art is devoted only to the works of Southern artists and is a crown jewel of the New Orleans Warehouse Arts District. Founded in 1999 before opening at its current location in 2003, the museum serves close to 85,000 patrons a year.

The museum holds one of the largest collections of Southern art as it strives to preserve the unique history and culture of the Southern United States. Started with a donation of 600 works of art from philanthropist Roger H. Ogden, the collection touts media such as paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, watercolors, photographs, and more.

Highlights of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art has now grown to over 4,000 pieces. Artists in the collection include Benny Andrews, George Ohr, Clementine Hunter, Will Henry Stevens, and more. The pieces in the collection date from 1733 to the present.

The museum attracts a wide variety of patrons through additional programming aimed at furthering the understanding and appreciation of Southern arts and culture, including concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, and lecture series. The museum consists of 2 buildings: the historic Patrick F. Taylor Library and the Stephen Goldring Hall, a 47,000-square-foot glass and stone building that opened in 2003 and was named for the New Orleans philanthropist.

Good things to know before visiting the Ogden Museum of Southern Art

The Stephen Goldring Hall of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art features over 25 galleries and is organized by chronological order and theme, and a portion is dedicated to traveling exhibits. On Thursday nights, the museum offers a concert series called the Ogden After Hours in the museum’s atrium.

Tickets may be purchased online or in person at the museum. Discounts are offered to seniors, students, educators, and military personnel, while free admission applies to children under 5, members of the museum or North American Reciprocal, employees of other arts institutions, and faculty, students, and staff of UNO.
