The history of Noordermarkt

Noordermarkt began in 1616 with an original name of Prinsenmarkt, which was the name of the canal inside the square. However, in 1623 the Noorderkerk church was completed. Due to its significant presence in the square, the name was changed to Noordermarkt.

Until 1655, the market area was more of a graveyard for the church than an actual market. In addition, during World War II, the people who planned the February Strike of 1941 to protest the Jews’ deportation by the Nazis first demonstrated in the square. A plaque to the south of Noorderkerk church honors this event.
