This was our first time at a ryokan. When we arrived, Google maps had us walk from the museum of the Little Prince bus stop across the street and down an alley, which was great. However, it then suggested we turn left down a driveway/small road; don’t do that, continue straight to the main street and then turn left. Upon arrival we were asked to remove our shoes and taken to the welcome room. Here, we were given matcha tea and another slightly sweeter jelly-type food of which I don’t know the name. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful by explaining everything in English. We then chose our yukata to wear during our stay. Next, we were given a tour. We chose the 6PM dinner, which allowed us time to enjoy a soak in the onsen before dinner. The reservation of the private onsen simply consists of writing your room number on the whiteboard timetable outside the onsen. There are two private onsen and a public onsen for each gender for which no reservation was needed. The whole place is very quiet and relaxing. Our room was very clean and had its own smaller onsen out the back door. Since you shower before your soak in the onsen, this is where your actual shower was too. Dinner was served in our room. It is a LOT of food, so be prepared. The beds were comfy and breakfast was served in the Breakfast Room. The staff were very friendly and I would recommend this place.

My stay here and Hakone trip was the best part of our Japan trip! Rikyuan is very classy and quaint from the moment you walk in, the service feels very specialised and the environment is peaceful and relaxing. It is close to the bus stop and we were able to forward luggage here from Hakone Yumoto so no need to stress out about getting here. I booked a room with a private outdoor bath and it was really cool to use. There are also public women and men's onsen, as well as two private reservable onsen for the whole ryokan which are easy to book timeslots for. The reservable onsen was also really nice to use so you don't miss out on anything if you don't get a private bath. Breakfast and dinner were always served timely and had a variety of foods. Breakfast is a japanese style meal usually with rice and fish and other foods, and dinner changed each night with about 6-7 different courses. The food may be a bit different if you are not used to japanese food, but i really enjoyed trying everything. The staff are all very nice and welcoming and there were a number of them who were able to speak with us in English if we needed help or service. Overall I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely recommend it if you are going to Hakone!

Traditional Japanese experience
If you are after a genuine Japanese traditional experience then this is it! We were greeted end after taking shoes off at the sliding door, into a reception area with tea. Then shown how and where the insensitive were before seeing our traditional room with futons (very comfortable) and low table, with en suite bathroom. The evening meal was a multi dish experience serve in our room by the lovely Rani. Breakfast was with others in a room with 6 traditional tables and floor seating. Salmon and kiwi were among several dishes. ONsens can be booked for private times as well as public ones available. The private ones are wooden in a small garden area...just a brilliant experience. Thanks to the team who made this a brilliant time for us.

We didn’t know what to expect and were blown away. We opted for the room with the private Onsen, while our friends opted for the normal room upstaira. We did NOT regret paying the extra money since it was so worth it. The service throughout the ryokan was incredible, including the gorgeous multi-course Kaiseki meal that was served to us by the wonderful staff member, Liu. The meal was stunning, the sake amazing, the whole atmosphere serene and magical. Soaking in our tub after that meal as rain fell on the bamboo roof above us was such an incredible moment for us. The tatami mat beds were actually very comfortable and we slept so well. Breakfast was lovely and everything was just totally magical. Highly recommend the Onsen room for couples. So romantic.

Highly recommended. Amazing quiet ryokan, with great traditional dinner and breakfast. We stayed for two nights, and it was raining heavily. The ryokan has two private onsens (and another two regular ones for men/women) , and using them during the rain was a unique experience. Staff was delightful and helpful.

Authentic Japanese accommodation
This is great accommodation, the staff were extremely helpful from the time they greeted us at the front door until they said goodbye. the Futon was comfortable, two of the stand outs of this property were the Japanese bath and the food. There is massage available on site, which you can book when you arrive. When you book ensure you book the evening meal which is eight courses served in your room, sensational local cuisine. Book the late breakfast the next morning because it is beautiful and large. It is close to the bus stop so buy a bus pass for your stay, you can use the pass on the Lake Ashie cruise and other local attractions.
