EXCELLENT - exactly as advertised - perfect stay
The room was exactly as the photos showed - not often do we get this! Thank you for being honest! A supreme place to stay - very clean, superbly decorated, comfy bed with enough pillows to make you sleep like a baby. Loved our stay - nothing was a problem. You get your own breakfast in the well equipped kitchen - you can eat outside on the sunny deck or inside on the table. There's a tele in the main room with a very comfy couch. The owner is soooo lovely - we had a friendly chat in the morning - she has made this place so welcoming and delightful to stay in. The location is great for getting around in the car - close to shops, beach, scenic drives. Easy to park the car - in the driveway if suitable, or on the road - all free. The bathroom is large and has all you need. Good size wardrobes in the bedroom, free slippers and dressing gown to wear. Highly recommend and will happily come again - thanks a lot!

The owner Shareen was kind and hospitable. She made the stay warm and friendly. Each day she had baked something delicious for breakfast (pancakes, focaccia, muffins) which was a lovely thought. The location is excellent enabling a quick walk down to restaurants, cafes and the beachfront promenade. Highly recommended

It should be Bays Hostel.
I am surprised about the high rating of this establishment. It is a clean and pretty house in a lovely neighborhood, but I feel as if "The Bays Hostel" would be a more appropriate name. Some concerns included: a) The room can only be locked from the inside and cannot be locked when guests are not there. I didn't feel comfortable leaving personal documents or anything valuable. b) What was mentioned as a futon on the listing, was a junky air mattress on the floor with only 1 pillow, a bottom sheet, and a top blanket. The owner instructed me to find another pillow in the closet, but the doors were blocked by the air mattress on the floor. c) I'm hoping the "private bathroom" was indeed private, but since it was not connected to my room, I don't know if other guests used it. It did have excellent water pressure d) There is a house cat which should have been mentioned for people with allergies. e) The continental breakfast consisted of toast, instant coffee, tea, yogurt, and cereal. f) When we arrived, we drove into the driveway. Before we could get out of the car, the owner was telling us how rude we were for driving into the driveway. We backed out and parked on the street. The owner mentioned that we should have read the email about parking instructions. She never emailed anything about parking. d) Once inside, the owner told me that I only reserved a room for 3 people. I showed her the reservation, which was clearly for 4 people.

4/10 Fair

I had booked a family room for 2 adults and 2 children, aged 13 and 14. (Children are apparently classed under 17 years according to the website) We were charged an extra $50 dollars per child! Not discussed when booked. The extra beds were air mattresses! Alot of money for an uncomfortable bed. The noise from the upstairs room was loud and we could hear doors sliding back and forth. The property was in a great area, clean and well presented.

Don’t judge this book by the nice cover it’s worse
I was disappointed that the operator of the B&B reacted strongly against my entering the establishment with my shoes on, said she had a sign posted but upon leaving I noticed it was on the back of the front door. I guess it’s “normal” to walk barefoot in NZ. I’m over 60 years old wearing new shoes and came from the airport. My shoes weren’t dirty and she said this was the policy of the B&B. Also she had a large cat which roamed, got on the furniture, etc. The problem is I’m allergic to cats and there was no warning in hotels.com. They have a key pad lock on the front door that was temperamental. Other guests said they had similar issues. I rang the doorbell and another guest came to the door but told me through the glass that the owner forbad guests from opening the door for other guests. The operator also made me read the house rules. Yep it says you can’t open the door for other guests. Apparently you can’t bring pork into the premises due to the owners religious beliefs. I found the whole vibe off-putting and obviously the owner is not a true Kiwi. When asked about it the owner said, yeah I probably should put in the house rules into hotels.com. Ya think. Breakfast consists of box cereal that you will share with other guests and freeze dried coffee. This is not proper NZ etiquette. I’m sorry but with rules/cat situation, I didn’t ever feel comfortable staying there. The location is not near restaurants, etc. I don’t recommend.

Host Shareen was wonderful: helpful, great communication especially with our very late arrival due to flight delay; rooms was modern, comfortable, clean, quiet; bathroom was very modern with great shower. Common kitchen and lounge was comfortable, and outdoor table and yard were peaceful with lots of bird song. The 5 minute walk to the beach is lovely with restaurants and cafes close by. Each morning Shareen made something special for breakfast which was a bonus. Will definitely stay again.
